First position – Both feet flat on the foor, toes are turned out (from the hip – not the knee) reaching as far as possible in attempt to achieve a straight line from left toe tips through right toe tips. Weight should be comfortably distributed between the heels, balls of the feet, and the toes. Watch for “rolling in” and “rolling out”, when the weight is improperly distributed to the inner or outer edge of the feet.
Second position – Feet are once again properly turned out, but there is space between them of approximately 1 1/2 times the length of one of the dancer’s feet. Some say the feet should be placed slightly wider than shoulder width apart.
Third position – Feet are turned out, and one foot is in front of the other, both are flat on the ground, and weight is evenly distributed. The heel of the front foot should be aligned to touch the bottom foot behind the ball of the foot – about the high point of the arch. Hips should be evenly squared toward the front. Both legs should be straight.
Fourth position – Fourth position is somewhat like an open third position. In fourth position, the feet are turned out and crossed one in front of the other, hips squared to the front, straight legs, weight evenly distributed between both feet, and within each foot. But the legs are open from front to back, as if the dancer took one step front from third position and stopped with approximately 6-10″ between the two feet (less for a young dancer).
Fifth position – This is a very tightly squeezed position, where the feet are crossed with one directly in front of the other, and toes turned out to the sides, but hips must be kept squared to the front. The dancer is attempting to make a flat line from the turned out front foot, and match it up with the back foot turned out in the opposite direction. The toe of the back foot should be hiding directly behind the heel of the front foot, and the heel of the back foot should be hiding directly behind the toe of the front foot.
